How These Real Housewives Got Sober

The Real Housewives franchise has a drinking problem on its hands. Case in point: Shannon Beador got behind her wheel drunk. Her car wrecked, she fled the scene, and shortly after, Shannon was sentenced to three years of probation. This wasn’t shocking, sadly, as Shannon now joins a long line of alcohol-related legal issues on Bravo.

Gina Kirschenheiter was also arrested for a DUI, while Kim Richards was arrested for disorderly conduct. In addition to these arrests, let’s not forget the dozens of lost memories, Heather Gay‘s mysterious black eye, and Brandi Glanville‘s drunken behaviors on Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip, which saw sexual assault allegations arise.

Alcohol is a problem. We aren’t the only ones who think this to be true. Several of the Housewives have caught on to the pitfalls that just a few shots can bring, and therefore, many of them have now gone sober. As we know liquor helps to loosen these stars for filming, this cannot be an easy lifestyle change for the ladies to partake in.

But, partake they are—and they have all admitted that it’s been hard. We'd like to give them credit as we are impressed with their vulnerability. With that in mind, these Real Housewives have been refreshingly honest about their sobriety journeys.

Steal these must-have tools they have used to change their relationship with alcohol.

Discover Your why: We all have reasons for which we drink. To relax, socialize, a reward at the end of a long day, a boost of energy, to make something more exciting, etc. Alcohol fills a lot of roles. To change our relationship with it, we need to figure out what we use it for and why it is no longer serving us. Alcohol is like putting a band-aid over a bullet wound. This is a chance to get honest with yourself. Build a case against alcohol and why you are kicking it to the curb. Is it to be a better parent or spouse, to alleviate the shame and guilt that comes with drinking, to propel your career, to build deep meaningful relationships with loved ones, to nix dreadful hangovers, or simply for the health of it?

Community: We saw a lot of housewives get questioned, teased, and even bullied for their choices to go booze-free. The same is true for a lot of us off the screen. There is something powerful about being in a group of women with the same goals. Imagine being surrounded by other women who are going through and feeling the exact same things you are.

This is what A Sober Girls Guide Group Coaching is. Weekly live video calls with like-minded women to check in and learn the tools you need to have a happy, healthy, and emotionally fulfilling alcohol-free life. With a combination of actionable steps, accountability, and weekly homework assignments and exercises, you will be livin' la vida booze-free in no time! (and you will actually enjoy it!)

Non-Alcoholic Alternatives: There is a lot of drinking, however all the drinks do not have to include alcohol. Non-alcoholic alternatives are a game changer when you don’t know what to do with your hands or need a treat at the end of a long day. They are great replacements for your evening and social ritual. Here is a list of some of the Real Housewives favorites.

Structure: Kyle Richards is a pro at this. She has a morning and evening routine that she loves and makes her feel accomplished every day. To start pick either a nighttime or morning routine you would like to implement into your day. See examples below.

Morning Routine:

7 am: Wake up

7:15 am: Coffee/protein shake

7:30 am: Meditation/ journaling/walk

8 am: Shower and get ready for your day

Evening Routine:

9:30 pm: Phones down

9:45 pm: Skincare routine

10 pm: Reading in bed

10:30 pm Lights out
