The Sober Superstars of The Super Bowl
Super Bowl 56 was amazing! The LA Rams took the win over the Cincinnati Bengals at home in LA at the SoFi Stadium. In true LA fashion celebrities were out supporting their home team. Let’s be perfectly honest, the game was great, the commercials whatever, but the 2022 half time show was incredible, it was the main event. The stage was shared by hip hop legends Mary J Blige, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and a surprise appearance by 50 Cent.
Not only are these artists a millennial musical wet dream, sober and sober curious people everywhere were impressed and inspired to hear that 4 out of the 6 performers are booze free. If you think sobriety is easy just because you are a celebrity, think again. Here is a small insight into each of their worlds and why they chose to re evaluate their relationship with alcohol.
Mary J Blige: “I realized I was going to die if I didn’t stop drinking. If I didn’t stop doing drugs, I was going to lose my career completely,” she recalls.
Her then-spouse, Kendu Isaacs, tried to help her.
“My husband had come into my life at that point. He challenged me. He asked me these questions: ‘Why do you hate yourself? Why do you drink so much? Why? Why?’” she revealed. “It drove me crazy to the point where I started to ask myself those questions, and the answers were always: ‘I don’t know.’”
Her wake-up call came when pop star Aaliyah perished in an airplane crash.
Blige has been open about her struggles with substance abuse, revealing in 2013 that her issues are rooted in being sexually abused as a child. This led to one of her lowest moments that should have been one of her best: being drunk and high on cocaine when winning her first Grammy in 1995.
50 Cent:
In his new book, Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter, the hip-hop mogul opens up the challenges of remaining sober while being invested in the liquor business. But he figured out a way to remain social when he goes out with friends to the club. Instead of champagne in his cup, 50 swaps it out for something lighter. “First I’ll pour drinks from a bottle of champagne for everyone who is in VIP with me. When the bottle is empty, I’ll give it to one of my guys and have him quietly refill it with ginger ale,” he writes, according to Page Six.
Kendrick Lamar: Kendrick Lamar is sober and an advocate for drug-free living, as he grew up in a family that partied regularly and he saw the negative effects of drugs and alcohol. He experimented with alcohol and drugs when he was younger but saw his loved ones suffering. He spoke of his intention to stay sober, and encourage others to do the same, during an interview on the Arsenio Hall Show.
Eminem: Once taking up to 60 Valium and 30 Vicodin pills a day during the peak of his drug addiction, Eminem is coming up on 14 years of sobriety. “In 2007, I overdosed on pills, and I went into the hospital,” said Eminem. “I was close to 230 pounds. I’m not sure how I got so big, but I have ideas. The Coating on the Vicodin and the Valium I’d been taking for years leaves a hole in your stomach, so to avoid a stomachache, I was constantly eating, and eating badly.”
